There are direct flights to Manchester Airport from over 190 destinations, notably:

From Manchester Airport there are frequent trains to Manchester Piccadilly train station (duration between 12 and 18 minutes, price £4.00-£7.00). You can also take a taxi to the city centre (cost around £25)

In addition, Liverpool John Lennon Airport is 1 hour away from Manchester city centre by direct bus. Liverpool Airport is served by several budget airlines with direct connections to numerous locations in Europe.

The legal currency in the UK is the British Pound (symbols: £ or GBP). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted but beware that many places only accept pin+chip cards! (US travellers may have some difficulties with their magnetic strip cards...)
